My
name, as if you couldn't guess, is Christopher
Beck. You can call me Chris for short. I have a wife named Carrie with whom I celebrated my seventh anniversary in June. We have a daughter, Haley,
3, and a son, Dawson,
born last January. That explains why I don't upate the site much.
We lived in Silicon Valley for about a year and a half, but now we are back home in Charlotte, NC. If you've never been to California and you're thinking of moving here, take my advice: visit first. This is place is like nothing you've ever seen. It will cost you a fortune for a 40-year-old tract home 7 feet from the busy street and with even less distance to your neighbors. No thanks, I need to breathe. And 6 months without rain in the summer puts a lot of pressure on you to stay outside. While the temperature is pretty mild year round, I like having four seasons over the two you have in the Bay area (sunny and rainy).
We're
originally from North Carolina. I never realized what a beautiful state
North Carolina is until I moved away. California has a lot of beautiful
areas, but I think NC is underrated. It's nice to be back home again.
In 1997, I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a school that I'm fiercely proud of (don't pull for dook around me, Jack!) Chapel Hill is definitely one of my favorite towns. But Charlotte is where the family is (both Carrie's and mine), so Charlotte is home. The town has grown up a lot over the five years we were gone. The south side where we are has become a really nice place to live. We are actually going to be closing on our first house in September, so we are really excited. I won't describe it out of respect for my California co-workers, but let's just say that I don't personally know too many people that could afford to build my house in Los Gatos...
I began my Silicon Valley career as the Webmaster for Planetweb, a Silicon Valley start-up that makes a great web browser for TV-based Internet Appliances. The trip my brother, Steve, and I made across the country to get me there was exactly that - a trip. But the job was a dream come true! And it led to the position I have now as a Web Applications Developer for Millennia Vision Corporation. MVC is an exciting, fast-paced and growing eBusiness enabler. I work for the Silicon Valley divisions from my home in NC - not a bad gig if I do say so myself. God, I love this country!
